The importance of migration told through sculpture
Migration is more than movement. It’s a journey through identity, memory, and belonging.
The Gallery of Human Migration Literary Award celebrates journeys—stories that cross borders, overcome barriers, and weave a universal tale of movement, identity, and belonging.
The sculpture that is symbolic of the award, entitled “I’M MIGRATION”, captures the essence of transformation, resilience, and the ever-evolving nature of migration, turning stories into something tangible, something felt.
“I’M MIGRATION” is also a play on words. On the one hand, in English, it means “I am Migration”, on the other hand, if you drop the apostrophe, it becomes “IMMIGRATION’ that is, also in English, “the process of moving to”, the process of moving towards.
The Gallery of Human Migration Literary Award
The Gallery of Human Migration (Gallery) launched a “Call for expression of interest” in February 2025, inviting Canadians to share their unique stories as part of its first-ever Gallery of Human Migration Literary Award.
By the April 30th deadline, the Gallery received a generous response: a chorus of voices from across the country, eager to share their journeys of beckoning, beginning, becoming, and belonging.
On May 9th, the sculpture was officially dedicated during the 50th Anniversary Gala in honour of Danny Montesano. The Brazeau-Montesano Award is a tribute not only to two lives but to all the journeys of courage, change, and connection that the award hopes to celebrate.
The Gallery of Human Migration Literary Award will be an annual event to encourage and celebrate the artistic expression of the migration experience in keeping with the Gallery’s vision of the four stages of migration: Beckoning, Beginning, Becoming, and Belonging.
The Gallery recognizes that migration is more than moving—it is a human right; a powerful shared experience that transforms individuals, communities, and cultures. It exists to help contextualize the forces that transform societies through the dynamic contribution of migration.

La scultura simbolo del premio, intitolata “I’M MIGRATION“, cattura l’essenza della trasformazione, della resilienza e della natura in continua evoluzione della migrazione, trasformando le storie in qualcosa di tangibile, qualcosa di sentito.
“I’M MIGRATION” è anche un gioco di parole. Da un lato, in inglese, significa “io sono migrazione”; dall’altro, se si elimina l’apostrofo, diventa “IMMIGRATION”, ovvero, sempre in inglese, “il processo di spostamento verso”, il processo di avvicinamento.
La Gallery of Human Migration (la Galleria) ha lanciato un “Invito a manifestare interesse” nel febbraio 2025, invitando i canadesi a condividere le loro storie uniche come parte del suo primissimo Gallery of Human Migration Literary Award.
Entro la scadenza del 30 aprile, la Galleria ha ricevuto una risposta generosa: un coro di voci da tutto il paese, desiderose di condividere i loro viaggi di richiamo, inizio, divenire e appartenenza.
Il 9 maggio, la scultura è stata ufficialmente dedicata durante il Gala del 50° anniversario in onore di Danny Montesano. Il Brazeau-Montesano Award è un tributo non solo a due vite, ma a tutti i viaggi di coraggio, cambiamento e connessione che il premio si propone di celebrare.
Sarà un evento annuale per incoraggiare e celebrare l’espressione artistica dell’esperienza migratoria, in linea con la visione della Galleria delle quattro fasi della migrazione: Richiamo, Inizio, Divenire e Appartenenza.

The Award’s sculpture by Rocco Maragna
This sculptural piece embodies the essence of migration through its fluid yet fragmented form. Cast in a luminous white material, it suggests both resilience and transformation, evoking the journey of individuals, both physical and metaphysical. The base of the sculpture is solid and rooted, representing origins, heritage, and the foundation of identity. As the form ascends, it begins to twist and open, conveying movement, adaptation, and the inevitable change that migration brings. One side of the sculpture bears a jagged, almost geological texture, reminiscent of landscapes shaped by time, while the opposite side curves inward, forming an elegant spiral—perhaps a nod to the cyclical nature of history, memory, and cultural transmission. The reaching, delicate extensions at the top appear as if grasping toward the unknown, a poetic representation of hope, struggle, and new beginnings. The overall shape recalls both a cresting wave and an unfolding wing, reinforcing themes of passage, flight, and rebirth. Crocetta’s work speaks to the emotional and existential dimensions of migration, capturing the tension between departure and arrival, loss and renewal. The void at its centre may symbolize the space left behind or the transformative space where identities are reshaped. This piece is not just an award; it is a symbol to the ever-evolving narrative of migration, a sculptural metaphor for those who navigate between worlds, carrying fragments of their past while shaping new futures.

Questa opera scultorea incarna l’essenza della migrazione attraverso la sua forma fluida ma frammentata. Fusa in un materiale bianco luminoso, suggerisce sia la resilienza che la trasformazione, evocando il viaggio degli individui, sia fisico che metafisico. La base della scultura è solida e radicata, a rappresentare le origini, il patrimonio e le fondamenta dell’identità. Man mano che la forma sale, inizia a torcersi e aprirsi, trasmettendo movimento, adattamento e l’inevitabile cambiamento che la migrazione porta con sé. Un lato della scultura presenta una texture frastagliata, quasi geologica, che ricorda i paesaggi modellati dal tempo, mentre il lato opposto si incurva verso l’interno, formando un’elegante spirale—forse un richiamo alla natura ciclica della storia, della memoria e della trasmissione culturale. Le estensioni delicate e protese in cima sembrano come se stessero afferrando l’ignoto, una rappresentazione poetica di speranza, lotta e nuovi inizi. La forma complessiva ricorda sia un’onda che si infrange che un’ala che si dispiega, rafforzando i temi del passaggio, del volo e della rinascita. Il lavoro di Maragna parla delle dimensioni emotive ed esistenziali della migrazione, catturando la tensione tra partenza e arrivo, perdita e rinnovamento. Il vuoto al suo centro può simboleggiare lo spazio lasciato alle spalle o lo spazio trasformativo in cui le identità vengono rimodellate. Questo pezzo non è solo un premio; è un simbolo della narrativa in continua evoluzione della migrazione, una metafora scultorea per coloro che navigano tra mondi, portando frammenti del loro passato mentre modellano nuovi futuri.
